The British Council has relaunched its Travel Grant Fund, with £623,000 available over three years to support UK filmmakers and XR creatives attending international film festivals, showcase events, creative development labs and co-production forums. The fund is supported by BFI National Lottery funding, in partnership with BFI NETWORK and the BFI International Fund.
Designed for early to mid-career filmmakers and XR creatives, the fund aims to enable participants to represent their work internationally, develop new contacts and networks, reach new audiences, and increase the exposure of UK films, XR projects and talent overseas.
The programme is divided into five grant strands:
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, with no deadlines, although they must be submitted before travel takes place. The British Council publishes key lists of eligible festivals, showcases, labs and co-production forums, which are reviewed every six months.
According to the British Council's guidance, festival travel grants range from £150 to £1,500, while Creative Development Lab Grants are capped at £6,000 and Co-Production Forum Grants at £2,000. Grants are intended as a contribution towards eligible travel, accommodation, participant fees and, for XR projects, certain showcasing costs. They will rarely cover the full cost of attendance.
The fund also includes additional support for accessibility requirements and Green Travel Bursaries for applicants travelling overland to eligible European events.
